Spencer Vandam is a specialist ergonomic furniture and seating business supporting individuals, workplaces, designers and health professionals across Victoria.

We are known for a considered, practical approach to ergonomics that balances function, comfort and long-term use. Our role is to listen first, guide carefully, and help people make clear decisions in environments that are often complex or high-stakes. We work alongside those we support, respecting clinical recommendations, design intent and organisational requirements rather than overriding them.

Our team includes health-trained consultants, product specialists and in-house delivery crews who remain involved from first conversation through to installation, adjustment and ongoing support. We do not rush decisions, outsource responsibility or disappear after delivery. We focus on reliable processes, practical outcomes and long-term relationships built on trust and follow-through.

Our History

Backcare & Seating was established in 1989 with a clear focus on providing well-considered ergonomic furniture and seating solutions that genuinely support how people work and live.

The business began by supporting individuals and health professionals, particularly in clinical and rehabilitation settings. Over time, it expanded to workplaces, designers and organisations managing more complex ergonomic requirements, while maintaining the same careful, outcome-led approach.

As the scope of work grew, so did the capability behind it. The business developed strong relationships with Australian and international manufacturers, built in-house delivery and support teams, and established multiple locations across Victoria to ensure local, accountable service.

Today, Spencer Vandam represents the evolution of that foundation. While the name has changed, the people, standards and way of working remain the same. We continue to operate as a hands-on, family-run business with long-standing staff, in-house teams and relationships built on consistency, care and trust.

1989

Backcare & Seating opens its first showroom in Carlton, helping Melburnians find better comfort and support at home and work.

2011

Simon, Ben & Matt open first showroom in Hallam, expanding our ability to support customers across Melbourne’s south-east.

2016

Simon, Ben & Matt take the reins of the Carlton business, bringing a new generation of leadership while continuing the values and service the business was built on.

2020

The Carlton showroom relocates to Rathdowne Village, creating a larger space to showcase ergonomic solutions, workplace furniture and project capabilities.

2021

The opening of our Geelong showroom allows us to better support customers throughout Geelong and Western regional Victoria.

2026

Backcare & Seating becomes Spencer Vandam. While the name changes, the people, relationships and commitment to helping people work and live more comfortably remain the same.

What We Do

We support a wide range of clients, from individuals seeking better everyday comfort through to therapists, designers and organisations delivering workplace, rehabilitation and fitout projects of varying scale.

Our work spans home environments, clinical settings and commercial spaces. In every context, we provide clear guidance grounded in experience and shaped by the people involved. We support therapist recommendations, collaborate with designers, and help workplaces navigate ergonomic decisions that balance compliance, usability and long-term value.

We provide end-to-end support, managing the practical detail from assessment and product selection through to coordination, delivery and setup. All delivery and installation is handled by our in-house teams, ensuring consistency and accountability.

Our involvement continues well beyond installation. We remain available to review, adjust and support solutions over time as needs change, ensuring they continue to perform as intended for the people who rely on them.

Our team is made up of experienced consultants, technicians and support staff who take pride in doing things properly.

With a background in Occupational Therapy and more than 15 years in the ergonomic equipment industry, he works closely with health professionals, designers and organisations to ensure solutions meet clinical, design and compliance standards.
